Why Router is Used?

A router is associate Intermediate System (IS) that operates at the network layer of the OSI reference model. Routers could also be accustomed connect 2 or additional informatics networks, or associate informatics network to a web affiliation.

A router consists of a pc with a minimum of 2 network interface cards supporting the informatics protocol. The router receives packets from every interface via a network interface associated forwards the received packets to an applicable output network interface. Received packets have all link protocol headers removed, and transmitted packets have a brand new link protocol header additional before transmission.

The router uses the knowledge command within the network layer header (i.e. informatics header) to come to a decision whether or not to forward every received packet, and that network interface to use to send the packet. Most packets ar forwareded supported the packet’s informatics destination address, at the side of routing data command inside the router during a routing table. Before a packet is forwarded, the processor checks the most Transfer Unit (MTU) of the desired interface.

Packets larger than the interface’s MTU should be fragmented by the router into 2 or additional smaller packets. If a packet is received that has the do not Fragment (DF) bit set within the packet header, the packet isn’t fragmented, however instead discarded.
